On Tuesday for Matariki week we did a rotation of Maori activities which were flax weaving, bread making, poi making [for the girls], a haka [for the boys] and we learnt the school waiata which was written especially for our wonderful school. The students all enjoyed the activities and learning about different Maori cultures. On Thursday we had a delicious hangi for lunch. We learnt about the process of how a hangi is made and were excited to watch the baskets being taken out of the ground when it was time to eat. We also had the Thames Kapahaka group come and perform which was great to watch.Thank you for all the food for the hangi and helping organise the activities and digging the hole for the hangi, it was certainly an excellent Matariki week!

Our day planting Kauri trees was awesome. We had to plant four Kauri trees each, with our whole class planting 100 Kauri trees altogether. After we finished planting we walked over to beautiful Otara Bay and had some yummy lunch. We then had a competition to see who could tidy up the most nurdles and rubbish [we all won]! After that we had a sand castle competition and the winners were Stella and Ella. We all enjoyed our tree planting trip and it is great to know that by planting 100 Kauri trees, we are doing something for the local environment that will be of benefit to this area for many years to come. On behalf of room 4 we would like to thank Miss Cherry from ‘Kauri 2000’ and Mrs Hetherington for organising an awesome trip. From Stella and Jenna Native Bird Art
In Room 4 we have been researching native birds and creating pictures of our birds. We translated Maori patterns and traditional colours into our birds shape to create visual contrast and effect. First we drew the outline with a pencil and then we went around the outline with a black permanent marker. After we had done that we had to fill our bird with all types of patterns and colours. Here is the finished result. From Zac |
